Toronto
real estate agent Anthony Fernandes, 47, was recently sentenced to 18 months in
jail for defrauding CMHC of $118,000.

The RCMP Toronto West Detachment, Commercial Crime Section,
says it uncovered a scheme orchestrated by Fernandes, where properties were
obtained through power of sale and then resold at inflated prices. The
properties were then mortgaged to the highest amount possible, using falsified
biographical data for the mortgages. A single charge of fraud was laid in relation to a property on Jane Street in Toronto
and similar fact evidence was also introduced in relation to two properties in Niagara Falls, Ont.
